What is Open Enrollment?

Arizona state law allows students to apply for admission to any state public school, based on available classroom space.  Open Enrollment applications are approved on a year-by-year basis with no guarantee of continued enrollment.  While most campuses in the Dysart Unified School District will have space for Open Enrollment students, some campuses will have closed enrollment because of growing student populations.

Who may apply for open enrollment?

Any family in Arizona may apply for Open Enrollment into a Dysart school.  For this reason, the state is considered among the leaders in the country for educational choice.

Where do I obtain/submit an application?

Open enrollment applications are only available on-line at www.dysart.org.  In the event you do not have computer access, you may utilize a computer at any of the Dysart Unified School Site libraries or at the District Office in order to submit your application on-line. One application is required for each student.  Separate applications must be completed and submitted for each school applied to.  Applications must be received no later than April 15 for the 2009-10 school year.

How is approval of an Open Enrollment application determined?

Approval of applications first requires a determination as to the number of Open Enrollment openings available per school, a process completed by April 15 of each year.  Students who have submitted applications will be ranked by priority status according to District Policy JFB.  Students on the listing will be notified of their acceptance, to match the predetermined open capacity of the campus; other applications may be placed on a waiting list.  Applications not given a priority status are considered in the order received

Back to FAQ

What is the Priority Listing for approval?

To create a system that supports the educational process, a priority status listing has been determined to provide preference to certain categories of students.  Priority status includes:

  1. siblings of students attending specialized Dysart programs;
  2. students who were granted Open Enrollment the previous year; and,
  3. siblings of a student who was granted an approval the previous year.
The priority listing helps students retain their Open Enrollment status from year to year, and helps to prevent families from being separated

Back to FAQ

What are the timelines?

Open Enrollment applications are due no later than April 15. The district will notify families of their application status the first week in May.  If the family chooses to accept the Open Enrollment slot, the student must complete a transfer or registration packet to the approved school no later than June 1 or forfeit the approved open enrollment.   Applications received after April 15 will only be considered after the tenth day of school.  If, after the tenth day, the campus has available capacity the application may be approved using the priority determinations.  However, it is suggested that parents carefully evaluate any request to transfer after the start of the school year for educational consistency.  Students may be granted Open Enrollment approval sufficient to fill the school’s capacity.

Back to FAQ

How will I be notified?

Parents will receive notification in writing of their application status the first week in May.  Applications may be approved, rejected or placed on a waiting list.  Notification will be made by mail.

Back to FAQ

What if I miss the deadline for the application?

If the April 15 deadline is missed, an Open Enrollment Application may still be submitted for consideration only after the first ten days of the new school year.  If after the tenth day there is available capacity, applications will be considered based on priority status.  Once the campus meets or exceeds its capacity, either through Open Enrollment or population growth, the school will be closed to further Open Enrollment.

Back to FAQ

May I apply during the school year?

While strongly discouraged, Open Enrollment Applications may be considered during the school year for campuses which have not reached capacity

Back to FAQ

What if my child is currently attending on Open Enrollment, do I have to reapply?

Yes, open enrollment applications must be filled out on a year-to-year basis.  Each year parents or students will need to fill out a new application for the coming school year.

What if I live in an unincorporated or unorganized territory?

An unincorporated area or unorganized territory is an area of the county that is not part of a school district.  Unincorporated or unorganized territory students are accepted at designated district schools based on the proximity to the unorganized/unincorporated area and/or the capacity level of the school.  Parents of unorganized/unincorporated area students will need to complete an Unorganized Territory Enrollment Application on-line.  Currently the district accepts students from unorganized/unincorporated areas that include Youngtown; Sun City; Sun City West; and, the area north of Jomax and east of 163rd Avenue.  The designated schools are as follows:

  • Youngtown – Luke Elementary School (K-8) and Dysart High School (9-12)
