OVERVIEW
At Western Peaks, we strive to offer multiple, varied opportunities for our young students in the arts. We provide positive feedback that will guide our students toward realizing their full potential. As well, we believe it is our purpose to prepare the elementary school students of Western Peaks for participation in the middle school arts through teaching them the core fundamental skills and attitudes needed for future participation in the arts at the middle school level. We accomplish this through providing Art and Music classes to students in grades K-5, as well as providing extracurricular clubs focused on the arts. Our students have participated in district showcases of the arts. At Western Peaks, we value teaching students life lessons through numerous before and after school activities.
ARTS OFFERINGS
Art Class
Art gives students the opportunity to learn in a hands-on environment that allows them to exercise their creativity. Students are encouraged to think critically and make personal connections with their subject matter. In class students learn and apply media, techniques, and processes as well as the fundamentals of the elements and principles of Art. Students apply their knowledge of structures and functions to each project. Students develop their ability to evaluate a range of subject matter, symbols, and ideas.
Music Class
The philosophy behind Mr. Bedolla’s music program is reflexive, which means to apply strategies that reveal student proficiency gaps and employ discussions that create independent learners. Further, Mr. Bedolla believes in pragmatic meanings and values, which is defined as learning through physical action rather than an aesthetic experience (merely being a bystander or listener in the music experience). These students will learn to read music, play a variety of instruments and even compose.
Western Peaks Elementary School offers Art Club and the Falcon Shrills Music Club as opportunities for students to further their artistic talents. Art Club will begin in October. Meetings will be held every Thursday before school from 8:00am to 8:35am in the art room. Membership is open to any third or fourth grade student that is interested. Art Club members will have the opportunity to participate in extra art projects that are not offered during the school day. Members will also support the Western Peaks and Dysart community by creating decorations for events that may be offered to Art Club during the school year. Other activities will be voted on by the club.
The Falcon Shrills Music Club begins in September and meet everyday from 8am-8:45am. This club is open to 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders. This club will teach students how to sing, play xylophone, piano, ukulele and also how to produce, mix and create their own unique music through digital audio workstations.
