Freedom 8th grader wins regional spelling bee

Congratulations to Isaac Mendez, an 8th grader at Freedom Traditional Academy, who won the 2025 Maricopa Region 5 Spelling Bee on February 8 at Youngker High School.  His winning word was “struthious.”

Isaac advanced to the region bee after winning his class and school competitions.  He then won the Dysart District spelling bee back on December 5th with the winning word of “genome.” 

Isaac will now move on to participate in the Arizona State Spelling Bee, which is scheduled for Saturday, March 15th, 2025 at the Madison Center for the Arts in Phoenix. For the two students who place first and second place in the Arizona Spelling Bee, the Arizona Education Foundation supports travel for the students and their chaperones to represent the state of Arizona as official champions in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
