Driver's Education

Dysart Unified School District's Community Education Department offers an Arizona Department of Transportation approved Drivers Education program for high school students including behind-the-wheel training for students that are at least 15 years, 6 months. Students must have their driving permit in order to receive the behind-the-wheel training. Students who successfully complete the program, which requires 100% attendance, will receive an official Driver Education Certificate which fulfills the state requirement for the Graduated License. The cost for the class is $450 and includes behind-the-wheel training. Each session is 10 weeks long; 5 weeks of lecture followed by 5 weeks of behind-the-wheel*. Summer sessions are condensed.


Behind the wheel time is scheduled throughout the week and on weekends. You will have the option to choose the time that works best for you once you have registered for the course.

Fall Session I: The lecture portion of the course will be held beginning August 17th, 2024. Behind the wheel will begin the week of September 15th, 2024 and will take place once per week; that link will be sent separately after the class begins.

Fall Session II: The lecture portion of the course will be held beginning September 21st, 2024. Behind the wheel will begin the week of October 27th, 2024 and will take place once per week; that link will be sent separately after the class begins.

Winter Session I:The lecture portion of the course will be held beginning November 9th, 2024. Behind the wheel will begin the week of December 8th, 2024 and will take place once per week; that link will be sent separately after the class begins.

Winter Session II: The lecture portion of the course will be held beginning December 14th, 2024. Behind the wheel will begin the week of January 26th, 2025 and will take place once per week; that link will be sent separately after the class begins.

Spring Session I: The lecture portion of the course will be held beginning February 1st, 2025. Behind the wheel will begin the week of March 2nd, 2025 and will take place once per week; that link will be sent separately after the class begins. 

 Spring Session II: The lecture portion of the course will be held beginning March 22nd, 2025. Behind the wheel will begin the week of April 13th, 2025 and will take place once per week; that link will be sent separately after the class begins. 

 Summer Session I:The lecture portion of the course will be held beginning June 2nd, 2025. Behind the wheel will begin the week of June 9th, 2025 and will take place once per week; that link will be sent separately after the class begins. 

 Summer Session II: The lecture portion of the course will be held beginning June 23rd, 2025. Behind the wheel will begin the week of June 30th, 2025 and will take place once per week; that link will be sent separately after the class begins.

FAQs

Does my student still need to take the road test at MVD once they complete the course?

No, they will not need to take the road test at MVD. Once they successfully complete the program, they will receive an official Driver Education Certificate which fulfills the state requirement for the Graduated License.

Is the lecture portion required even though my student has their permit?

Yes, the lecture portion of the class is required in order to receive the certificate of completion.  The lectures are held at the District Office in the East Board Room (15802 N Parkview Pl).  You will be notified in advance if there is a change to this.  

How do we register for the class?

Registration is online; you can click the button above to register.

Is our car used or another car used for practice?

We provide a car for behind the wheel instruction, however, students should be practicing with their parents at home as well in their own car.

Are the driving lessons 1:1?

No, there are 3 students in the car for each session; they rotate and drive for a little over an hour each. When they are not driving, they are receiving indirect instruction, looking at road signs, etc.

How long is each driving session?

75 minutes per student. Sessions are typically 3 students.

Where do we take our student for the behind the wheel lessons?

Drop off and pick up from the Dysart District Office (15802 N Parkview Pl).

Does my student need to attend a Dysart school to participate?

No, the class is open to all high school students in the community.

When do classes take place?

The lecture portion of the class is on Saturdays for the first 5 weeks of the course from 8am-2pm and attendance is mandatory. Behind the wheel take place on weekdays after school and on weekends; you choose the day that works best for your schedule. The summer schedule is condensed.
